Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Does the N8142 use batteries or a wall outlet, and what does its swing direction mean?
The exact N8142 manual specifies four D (LR20) alkaline batteries, not included; none of the three N8142 sheets establishes a wall-adapter plan. The caregiver can unlock and turn the seat tube to choose side-to-side or front-to-back movement, one selected direction at a time. Confirm the model label and battery-compartment condition, and do not substitute a later model's adapter.
Explore this need in the finder →What use limits are documented for the Dwell Studio N8142?
Mattel lists use from birth, while the manual sets a 25 lb maximum and directs caregivers to stop sooner if a lighter child becomes active and appears able to climb out. The instructions require the restraint and say never to leave the child unattended; Mattel's updated warning says the swing is not for sleep or unsupervised use. No minimum weight or separate insert requirement is established, and the age/weight listing is not a fit guarantee.
Explore this need in the finder →Can the N8142 pad and frame be cleaned or stored the same way?
No. The manual permits machine washing only the detached pad, in cold water with mild detergent and no bleach, followed by low-heat tumble drying; it directs separate damp-cloth cleaning for the seat, restraint, mobile and motorized frame. The frame folds for storage, but Mattel publishes no assembled or folded dimensions. Verify the exact unit, intact restraint/pad and all fasteners before considering an older example.
Explore this need in the finder →Assessment basis: this is a document-based review of the exact Mattel U.S. N8142 record, its model-linked instruction sheets, and the official support image—not a hands-on test. Mattel identifies the product as the Dwell Studio Cradle Swing, released in 2009 and discontinued in 2010. It does not establish a current retail offer, the package or condition of any particular old unit.
Two directions, selected by turning the seat
The N8142 manual describes a practical distinction that the phrase “two-way swing” can obscure. A caregiver presses the seat-tube button to unlock the tube, rotates the seat to the desired orientation, then uses the powered swing in that direction. The manual names side-to-side and front-to-back travel; it does not show the seat moving in both directions simultaneously. Treat this as two selectable orientations, not a promise of a more complex motion pattern or a measured clearance zone. Before placing one in a room, plan for the path of the selected movement as well as caregiver access.
The swing uses a powered frame and local controls. The manual illustrates six speed levels with LED feedback: the buttons raise or lower the setting, and the lights indicate the current speed. The sources do not establish phone-app, voice-assistant, or remote operation, or provide a measured swing arc or response guarantee.
Four D cells, with no documented outlet plan
The N8142's instructions require four D (LR20) alkaline batteries and say they are not included. The exact U.S. support page also lists four D cells. I found no outlet-powered plan in the three instruction sheets linked from that model page, so this assessment counts a battery arrangement and does not assume a compatible adapter. That matters when comparing it with later Fisher-Price swings: an adapter listed for another model is not evidence that it fits this one.
The manual describes music and nature sounds controlled at the swing, plus a dock for a separate MP3 player, which is not included. Separate those built-in selections from music supplied through the optional player; no app or current compatibility recommendation is documented. Mattel also describes a character mobile, but its reference image cannot prove which parts are present on an old unit.
Age and weight wording is not a fit guarantee
Mattel's U.S. support record lists use from birth until a child becomes active and can climb out. The N8142 manual sets a maximum of 25 lb and says to discontinue sooner if a child under that weight becomes active and appears able to climb out. The manual requires the restraint system and says never to leave the child unattended. Mattel's current support warning adds that swings should not be used for sleep or unsupervised use; if a baby falls asleep, the page says to move the baby to a firm, flat sleep surface as soon as possible.
“From birth” therefore describes the manufacturer's broad starting-age statement, not confirmation that a particular infant fits an individual old seat or that every angle is appropriate. The reviewed documents state no minimum child weight and no separate newborn insert requirement. The manual shows a reclined position and an upright position. Mattel's technical description says “3 seat positions” without explaining what its third position means, so I have not converted that phrase into a three-recline claim or guessed a position-specific weight rule. Match the exact unit label, its applicable instructions, and its restraint and pad before relying on the listing.
Care and folding have narrow meanings
The manual's cleaning directions separate fabric from structure. After unbuckling the restraint and detaching the pad, it permits machine washing the pad in cold water with a mild detergent and no bleach; the pad is tumble-dried on low and removed promptly. The seat, restraint, mobile and motorized frame are cleaned separately with a mild cleaner and damp cloth, then rinsed. Machine-washable softgoods do not make the whole swing washable. Check the exact textile care label, since a decades-old pad may not be the original one.
Mattel says the swing folds for storage, and the manual shows how to fold the frame. No assembled width, depth, height, folded size, weight, or moving-clearance measurement appears in the reviewed N8142 sources. A product photo is not a room-fit measurement; measure the actual complete frame and preserve space for movement, cords and safe caregiver access rather than treating “folds” as proof that it fits a particular corner or travels in a vehicle.
How it differs from nearby earlier swings
N8142 is not interchangeable with the other earlier Fisher-Price records in this library. For example, the separately reviewed X4400 documentation describes an original 6 V adapter or four-D-cell alternative; N8142's linked material documents four D cells, without an established outlet plan. The K7923 record also has a separately documented adapter/battery choice and its own model-specific details. These are comparisons of support records, not proof of electrical compatibility or a shared package. Keep the number on the actual product label in view when checking a listing, and do not substitute another model's manual, adapter, seat pad or restraint.
What to verify before assessing an old example
Because Mattel reports discontinuation in 2010, this page should be treated as an assessment for someone comparing an existing offer, not evidence that N8142 is currently sold. Ask for a clear view of the N8142 model marking and compare it with the correct instructions. Inspect the full frame, joints, fasteners, seat rails, battery compartment for corrosion, pad, restraint and every small assembly part; the manual says to inspect for damage and missing parts and never substitute parts. Confirm that the speed/motion controls, direction rotation and battery door are present, and follow current official safety and recall information for the exact unit. The saved model-code lookup is not unit clearance. The support image below identifies the model only; it is not a package or condition photograph.
