Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Would the older CHM85 meet a 25 lb request for battery-powered multi-direction motion with local controls?
Its exact manual documents four D cells, six on-unit speeds and adult selection of side-to-side or front-to-back powered travel. The same swing plan reaches a 25 lb maximum, but not 26 lb; it is an earlier model, the cells were not included originally, and its active/climb-out stop can apply sooner.
Explore this need in the finder →Can CHM85 meet a newborn-label, washable-pad and wall-outlet combination?
Mattel says use from birth, and the exact CHM85 instructions include the original 6 V DC adapter and a machine-washable removable pad. The manual requires full recline until the child is at least four months old and can hold the head up unaided. Check the exact unit's approved adapter and pad, and do not read the age label as a minimum-weight or fit guarantee.
Explore this need in the finder →Is CHM85 a compact swing with a confirmed 23-inch body width?
The frame folds inward for storage, but the CHM85 sources publish no body width, depth, folded dimensions or movement clearance. A foldable frame is not a fit measurement, so this model cannot satisfy a hard 23-inch width rule without an exact unit measurement.
Explore this need in the finder →Mattel's U.S. support record identifies CHM85 as its Woodland Friends Cradle 'n Swing and reports a 2015 release. The exact manual documents a powered seat that an adult can set for side-to-side or front-to-back travel, with six local speeds and two power arrangements. This is an earlier-model, source-based assessment; neither a present retail offer nor a particular used unit's package and condition is established.
Two selectable directions, not a blended motion
CHM85's manual describes a concrete change of direction: press the seat-tube release and rotate the tube to choose side-to-side or front-to-back movement. Those are alternatives, not simultaneous paths. That distinction is useful if your priority is to pick one familiar swing direction, but it does not establish how far the seat travels or what clearance the moving frame needs. The six speed buttons are on the unit; the documented setup does not rely on a phone app or voice control.
Mattel also advertises SmartSwing weight response and a start without a push. The support page says the swing senses the baby's weight so its speed will not slow as the baby grows. Treat that as the manufacturer's feature description, not an independently measured response curve or a guarantee that every baby will settle. The technical description lists 16 songs, nature sounds, a motorized mobile with three owl figures and a mirrored center, plus a removable bead tray. The manual says the music, sounds and mobile stop after about 20 minutes and can be restarted. It does not establish a swing auto-off timer.
Choose one of two supported power plans
The exact CHM85 instruction sheet lists a 6 V DC AC adaptor for wall-outlet operation and four D (LR20) alkaline cells as the alternative. It lists the adaptor in the original parts set but says the cells are not included. The AC instructions specify 120–240 V AC input and 6 V DC output, direct the caregiver to use a wall outlet, and prohibit extension cords. For an older or second-hand unit, check the actual product number and the model-recommended adaptor, cord and battery compartment; the original package list cannot prove that an offer still contains its parts or that an adapter is undamaged. Do not assume that a plug from a visually similar swing is interchangeable.
Use the recline and weight limits together
Mattel's support page says CHM85 can be used from birth and gives an approximate nine-month reference. The manual adds a specific posture condition: keep the seat fully reclined until the child is at least four months old and can hold the head up without help. The conjunction matters; age alone does not authorize the upright setting. The manual gives a 25 lb (11.3 kg) maximum and says to discontinue use sooner if an active child appears able to climb out. There is no numerical minimum weight in the reviewed record, and the label is not an individual fit assessment.
The five-point restraint is required; the tray is not a restraint. Mattel's current support warning says swings are not safe for sleep or unsupervised use, and the manual says the swing is not a substitute for a crib or bassinet for prolonged sleep. Stay with the child during awake use, follow the instructions for the exact model and move a sleeping baby to a firm, flat sleep surface. The 25 lb maximum is only a ceiling; it does not override the posture, activity or supervision limits.
Only the removed pad goes in the washer
The manual permits machine washing the removed pad in cold water with mild detergent and no bleach, followed by low-heat tumble drying and prompt removal. It separately directs damp-cloth cleaning for the seat, restraint, tray, mobile and motorized frame. This is not permission to wash the assembled seat or frame. Refit the pad and restraint as the instructions show before use. A washable pad may make routine cleanup easier, but a used listing needs its own check for the pad, buckles and intact fabric.
Foldable does not mean dimensioned
Mattel describes a folding frame for storage or room-to-room movement. The manual's storage steps move the legs inward and then lean the frame against a wall. Neither source gives assembled width, depth, height, folded measurements, product weight or a moving-clearance envelope. If your room has a tight boundary, measure the exact assembled unit and allow for its selected swing path rather than sizing it from the support photo or the word “folds.” No travel-with-child or portable-use approval follows from moving the frame between rooms.
Keep the CHM85 identity separate from a current offer
The exact technical record reports release in 2015 and leaves its Discontinued field blank. That supports an earlier-model comparison, not a known discontinuation year or a claim that a current offer exists. No retail SKU, current package, price, seller, or individual unit condition is established by the manufacturer pages. For a located example, verify the CHM85 label, frame, seat tube, restraint, pad, tray, mobile, battery door and exact adaptor against the instructions, and do not use a unit with missing or damaged parts.
A bounded scan of Mattel's recall index did not show CHM85, but that is not a complete recall history or a safety clearance for a specific date code or serial number. Check current Mattel and CPSC information for the exact unit before use. The official CHM85 support image is useful for model identification only; it is not a seller's package photo, a scale drawing or proof that any pictured parts are included.
